What should you do if things don’t feel quite right with your accountant?

Accountancy

We’ve all been there…

Receiving accountancy advice where things don’t feel quite right can negatively affect both your finances and your overall confidence in accountants.

Trusted advice is invaluable when it comes to most areas of your business, but when it comes to talking about your accounts, it’s vital!

So, what should you do if things don’t quite feel right?

Choosing the right accountant for you

When it comes to choosing an accountant, we urge you to follow our top tips. After all, it is your responsibility to follow regulations and keep your accounts compliant – regardless of whether you choose to receive help from an accountant!

  • Take your time.
  • Choose a certified or chartered accountant.
  • Seek an accountant with experience working with a business of a similar size to yours.
  • Look, and ask, for recommendations.
  • Ensure they work proactively, not reactively.
  • Make sure you know what services they will, and won’t provide.
  • Ask what software they use.
  • Find someone you like.

Working with an accountant

Like any other relationship, the working relationship you maintain with your accountant may run into some unexpected complications, despite your initial checks to ensure compatibility when first reaching out to them.

Maybe the way they communicate clashes with yours, or their working hours don’t fit your schedule? Whatever it is, make sure you communicate!

Communicating issues is always the best way to ensure you get the very best out of your working relationship. So, whether sharing your concerns results in improvement or a friendly farewell, it’s always better to remain open.

Unsure whether you’ve been given the right advice?

Knowing whether you have, or have not, been given the right accountancy advice can be difficult – especially if you aren’t clued up on accountancy terms and requirements.

This is why it’s important to have an accountant you trust, and feel comfortable with. If they are the right accountant for you they won’t mind explaining industry-specific terms and recommendations to you should you need extra clarification. Don’t forget, it’s their job to help you.

If you should decide you don’t want to follow their advice, that’s fine! At the end of the day it’s your responsibility to make the best choices for you and your accounts, providing those choices follow regulations.
