Head shave support for a close friend

Karen Whitehead

Our managing director Karen is on a mission to raise as much money as possible for Breast Cancer UK – and she is doing it in support of her close friend Lindsay who is currently undergoing chemotherapy.

Lindsay is a barber and a neighbour of ours right here at the Business Development Centre on Stafford Park in Telford. Lindsay’s treatment has led to her losing her hair and a general loss of confidence.

Karen is eager to support Lindsay through this difficult time and will be having her head shaved . . . by Lindsay on June 28 to show her solidarity with her friend and to raise funds for Breast Cancer UK in the process.

She has set up a just giving page and an incredible figure of £2,400 was donated within the first week.

Karen takes up the story:

“My beautiful friend Lindsay is currently fighting breast cancer at the age of 39. As a result of the chemotherapy she has lost her hair and this has knocked her confidence, meaning she is reluctant to go out because she worries that people are looking at her.

“I really wanted to do something positive to support her through this difficult time and having my head shaved seemed the best way of achieving that. It means that we can go out together, have a coffee, and at least she won’t feel like she is alone.

“Lindsay will carry out the head shave on June 28 – something that will show my solidarity, not only with Lindsay but with all the other women who are going through this terrible ordeal.

“It also provides the opportunity to raise as much money as we can for Breast Cancer UK – a brilliant charity that is doing so much to help rid us of this terrible disease. I had a fundraising target of £500 when I set up the just giving page but inside a week an amazing total of £2,400 had been raised.

“I am really grateful to all those people who have donated, it is much-appreciated and has already exceeded expectations. The page is still open and my goal now is simply to raise as much as we can for this most worthy of causes. Thank you for your support.”

Raising awareness

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK with more than 55,000 women and 390 men diagnosed with the disease each year – yet around a third of these cases are preventable. Breast Cancer UK is working hard to prevent breast cancer through education, collaboration, scientific research and policy change.

The charity provides practical advice and tips on reducing the risk of breast cancer and is committed to campaigning for changes to national health policies to support prevention and fund research to help improve understanding of how to stop the disease.
